About

Historicism / noun / hi-stôr-ə-sizəm
  1. a belief that history matters
  2. a theory that stresses the significant influence of history as a criterion of value
  3. the tendency to regard historical development as the most basic aspect of human existence

Actually, I am not an historicist yet. I am only trying to become one. After 9 years of training and 14+ years as a paid historian, it’s about time to figure out why it matters.

Update July 8, 2012:

Fuck that. I just want to figure how to finish being an historian. You’d think it would be easy.

Update November 5, 2012:

I did it. I quit. Now I’m learning how be something other than an historicist. . . . which may well be a better way to understand how it matters.

Update February 19, 2013:

Fuck that too (i.e., understanding how it matters). Better off dissolving the tentacled grip of historical consciousness.

  1. Adam The Lesser

I recently received a postcard which read, “Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in German, because life is also terrifying and confusing.” Don’t you study history to weed out some of the terror and confusion?

  2. Shoot me an email.. I was googling some stuff and ended up on your page about your ayahuasca ceremonies. Come to realize… I just got home from the same place you stayed.. Zach.rawlinson@gmail.com

  3. I remember you. You are QUAY. Richard Quay. You sound so angry, it’s just me – Nancy. We were children together. What’s really irritating you. You always seemed to me to be a rational sort of bare foot junkie…from a good family. You are one of the creative, why are you so mad? I would love to hear your actual thoughts. nancyhans116@gmail.com
